Practical Ways to Connect With God Daily

…When You Think You Have Little Time

Practical Ways to Connect with God Daily When You Think You Don't Have Time

I think we all feel we have so little time in the day. With the hours we work, taking care of the kids, the family, the spouse, volunteer work–the list goes on.  Here are some practical ways that we can connect with God daily even when we think we have very little time.

1.  Read a Proverb a Day

There are 31 Proverbs so you will always have a proverb to read. This is an easy way to know exactly what to read, even if you get off track.

Disarms the excuse: I don’t know what to read
Bonus: Proverbs are filled with wisdom for daily life. We can never have too much wisdom.

2.  Read the Verse of the Day

If you download the YouVersion Bible App, you can read the verse of the day each morning. This takes seconds to read. Even if you do what I do: I read it, then compare versions to get a better sense of what I am reading and understanding.

Disarms the excuse: I don’t have time to read
Bonus: Read the whole chapter that the Verse of the Day comes from.

3.  Start a Reading Plan

Again, using the bible app, select a reading plan to read daily. There are plans based on the topic of the Verse of the Day. Alternately, you can search by the topic of your choice.

The “discover” feature is another way to find a plan that interests you.

Disarms the excuses: I don’t know what to read. I don’t have time to read. I don’t like reading.
Bonus: There are many plans of varying lengths.  This refers to the overall length of the plan in days and the time it takes to read it each day.
There are video plans if you prefer to watch and listen instead of read.

4.  Try a Different Bible Version

For some the King James Version (KJV) seems challenging to understand. Try reading the bible in another version.  To get familiar with the meaning, you might benefit from reading the KJV side by side with a version like NLT or ESV.  The key is to choose a version that helps you understand.

Disarms the excuse: I don’t understand what I am reading or the Bible is just too hard to understand.
Bonus: If you understand by reading another version, you will want to read more.

5.  Get a Study Bible

Study bibles have practical life application. They make connecting with God through His word apply directly to your life today.

Disarms the excuse: I don’t know how to apply the word to my life.
Bonus: Study bibles often have background on the time period, author, wisdom for daily life, and modern application.

6.  Pray

Talk to God. Spend moments each day telling God how awesome He is and how thankful you are to belong to His great family.

This does not have to be a grandiose display in King James language. Just think of it like a conversation with a loving parent or friend because that is exactly what it is.

Example: Lord, thank you so much for forgiving me of my sins. Thank you for sending Jesus to die in my place so that I can live forever with you in Heaven one day.  You are worthy of all of my praise. I am grateful for ______.  Thank you so much for _______.

Disarms the excuse: I don’t know how to pray. I never know what to say when I pray.
Bonus:  You can write your prayers down so that you always have them to refer back to.  When you read your prayers (silently or out loud), you are praying.  It was a wonderful a-ha moment when I realized this.  I love to write so this is a great revelation for me.

7.  Keep a Prayer Journal

Create a prayer journal for yourself or find one on-line that meets your needs.  This will keep all your prayers, prayer requests, praise reports in one place.

When you are ready to connect with God daily, you can grab your journal and start there.

Disarms the excuse: All of the excuses!
Bonus: With a prayer journal, you always know where to begin.  It is a wonderful guide, and it also records past victories if you have a section for answered prayers.
What a wonderful tool to review when you have moments of doubt, sadness, etc.  Just look back over the answered prayers. Powerful.

  1. No more excuses, you’ve disarmed the ones that are most likely used. When I find myself making excuses I remember this quote I heard from
    Alex Seely… “it’s no such thing as I can’t, it’s either I will or I won’t.”

My favorite way is a reading plan. Thank you for sharing.
